"The Big Build" Chatham-Kent Home Builders Association
Members Volunteer |
|
On Friday
September 18, 2009, members of the Chatham-Kent Professional
Home Builders Association volunteered their skills on
location at the Children’s Safety Village. Four local sponsors have
purchased cement pads and materials needed to create miniature
replicas of their businesses, the Home Builders provided free labour by building the structures free of charge. Some of these
buildings will be used to teach interactive safety programs offered
to local youth. The new additions to the Village include;
Chatham-Kent EMS building, Chatham-Kent Fire Department, a Pioneer
barn, and a non-denominational chapel sponsored by the Knights of
Columbus. All building structures are up with only some
finishing details to be complete within the next few weeks.
Thank you to Water Elite for providing water coolers which kept
builders hydrated and thank you to the Knights of Columbus for
providing a wonderful BBQ lunch for all the volunteers.
There are
still some spaces available for purchase in our village, if your
business is interested in purchasing a pad, please contact Barb
Lovell, Executive Director, at 519-360-1270.

August 2009 Tim
Hortons "Earn A Bike" 2009 |
|
Five
local kids worked hard to earn a Raleigh Serengeti mountain bike and
bicycle helmet by participating in Tim Hortons ‘Earn- A- Bike’ program
this August.
As part
of the program, kids between the ages of 9 and 12 years old completed a
total of 30 hours of community service each over a two week period by
cleaning up at a local charity; the Chatham-Kent Children’s Safety
Village.
Their
duties during this time included stuffing loot bags, cleaning, and yard
work. They also received bicycle helmet fittings from Sergeant Pomajba
of the Chatham-Kent Police Service who stopped by to fit each of the
kids. Constable Cynthia Stotz also stopped by from CN Police and spoke
with the kids about railway safety, and the Chatham-Kent Children’s
Safety Squad came out to help pick up garbage and work alongside the
kids as mentors, finishing off their visit with a Safety Squad
presentation encouraging the kids to keep volunteering and maybe someday
become Safety Squad members themselves.
“The
Chatham-Kent Children's Safety Village is very proud to have the
opportunity to participate in such a great program that Tim Horton’s has
offered. This program not only teaches these young kids about value and
appreciation of earning something they want, but also gives us a
chance to educate them about the value of community and charitable
giving. We’ve enjoyed working with these kids and having an opportunity
to be part of something so rewarding on many levels. None of this could
have been made possible without Tim Hortons and WINDRIDE.” says
Executive Director, Barb Lovell.
This is
the second year that the ‘Earn –A- Bike’ program has been offered in
Chatham-Kent. It has been coordinated through the Chatham-Kent
Children's Safety Village, who has selected the kids through the
assistance of Big Brothers & Big Sisters and the Wish Centre of
Chatham-Kent. A very special thank you to WINDRIDE for their very
generous donation of transportation for the kids from the Wish Centre to
the Chatham-Kent Children’s Safety Village and back each day. As well,
thank you to Domino’s Pizza for donating lunch for the closing ceremony.
Tim
Horton’s representative and local store owner Scott Pritchard presented
the kids with their new bicycles on Friday, August 28th at
the Chatham-Kent Children’s Safety Village.

Union Gas Helps Beautify Safety Village |
|
On Saturday, July 11th, 2009, Union Gas volunteers
partnered with the Chatham-Kent Children's Safety Village to complete
phase three of the landscaping for the Union Gas Learning Centre.
Union Gas Helping Hands in Action volunteers and
Chatham-Kent Children's Safety Village Board Members and staff assisted
in bring phase three to life. Additional support was provided by a
$1000 Community Improvement Grant from Union Gas to purchase shrubs,
trees and mulch that will give year round colour in the entrance of the
Chatham-Kent Children's Safety Village.
Union Gas is a major sponsor of the Chatham-Kent
Children's Safety Village and continues to support the ongoing growth of
our facility and children’s interactive village.
“The special Union Gas employees and volunteers of
the Helping Hands in Action team exemplify what volunteering is all
about,” says Barb Lovell, Executive Director of the Chatham-Kent
Children’s Safety Village. “Their partnership to complete this project
is more than just planting a few trees and shrubs, it validates the
safety awareness work that we do in partnership with the emergency
services, businesses, organizations and individuals in Chatham-Kent who
donate and volunteer to.”
