| Close to 1,800 Canadian children and youths are hospitalized each year
due to pedestrian injuries.
5 – 9 year olds
have a higher rate of death and hospitalization than other age groups:
-
because children spend increasing amounts of time as pedestrians and
accordingly, the rates of injury and death peak in this range.
- children’s exposure suddenly
increases when their road skills are still deficient and they lack the
judgment to make good decisions on their own.
500 children
die from home injuries each year.
The main causes
of deaths in the home are fires, falls, poisoning, choking,
suffocation and drowning.
More than
28,500 Canadian children need medical attention every year for
playground injuries. More than 2,000 are hospitalized.
There is an
average of 126 drowning deaths and 314 hospitalizations for near drownings each year for children and youth under the age of 20.
Injuries
associated with dog bites and dog attacks are sustained most
frequently by 5 – 9 year olds.
Children and
youth are too often injured and sometimes die as a result of hazards
in their environment. Unintentional injury continues to be the
greatest cause of mortality, morbidity and disability for children and
youth in Canada. Most of these injuries are preventable. |
